The DAY SHELTER OF SIOUXLAND was a pilot project that opened its doors to the homeless of the Siouxland area during the daytime hours of 8:30 – 4:30 in the spring of 2017 (April 3rd – May 3rd). Previously, residents of the Warming Shelter had very few options for places to go during the day (Warming Shelter is open evenings to prevent the homeless from freezing to death during the winter season). The shelter was located in the Soup Kitchen at 717 West 7th Street. The Day Shelter averaged 27 individuals per day during the trial period. This project was made possible by Mercy Medical CenterLeadership Siouxland, the Soup Kitchen and the Warming Shelter. Moving forward, the Day Shelter of Siouxland will be a merged effort with the Warming Shelter, and hopes to open its doors again on November 1, 2017 for the winter season.
