Horns of the White Buffalo Society

The Horns of the White Buffalo Society is traditional warrior society that represents each branch of the greater Oceti Sakowin (“The Seven Council Fires” which are recognized under U.S. law as the Sioux Nation). Their purpose is to support the spiritual leader of the Oceti Sakowin, the keeper of the White Buffalo Calf Pipe Bundle. Chief Arvol Looking Horse is the 19th generation Keeper of this sacred bundle. The Society was recently activated in 2016 to help organize the resistance movement at Standing Rock. In 2023 Horns was tasked with redirecting their focus to the protection of the traditional ceremonies of the Oceti Sakowin. Horns is currently organizing a worldwide discussion about how to respectfully learn from and participate in Indigenous spiritual teachings and ceremonies.

The first step of Horns in fulfilling this new directive is to create a short educational documentary about restoring respect for the sacred traditions of the Oceti Sakowin.

“Restoring the Sacred” Film Project

For decades, many individuals have sought a more profound spiritual connection with the world, finding traditional religious institutions unable to satisfy their spiritual needs. As a result, some have turned to Native American spiritual traditions, readily finding workshops and lectures that claim to offer Indian rituals and ceremonies to non-Indigenous people.

The Horns of the White Buffalo Society is developing a short film that brings to light a crucial story delving into the contentious practice of cultural and spiritual "borrowing" from Indigenous communities, particularly the Oceti Sakowin (Sioux Nation). This film raises critical questions about spiritual and cultural appropriation and its impact on Indigenous communities.

Our film aims to serve as a catalyst for change. It seeks to prevent the exploitation of Indigenous spiritual traditions, promote cultural respect, and ensure the accurate representation of Native American spirituality.

By supporting this film, you're not just contributing to an important cultural dialogue but also aiding in the preservation of Indigenous spiritual practices and autonomy. Let's come together to foster a global movement towards harmony, balance, and respectful engagement with spiritual traditions. Your support can make a significant difference in this vital cause.
